China to stick to economic opening-up policy

GENEVA - China will continue its economic opening-up policy and it stands ready to join hands with other countries to overcome the global economic difficulties, a senior Chinese official said here on Monday.

"We firmly believe that opening-up will generate unlimited vitality for trade as well as dynamism for economic growth. Under no circumstances will China change its opening-up policy," said Yi Xiaozhun, China's vice minister of commerce.

Addressing a WTO session reviewing China's trade policies in the past two years, Yi said his country was still going through a period of rapid industrialization and urbanization, a process that "will unleash enormous demand for investment and consumption."

Ambassador: Wen's visit to greatly boost China-Mongolia ties

ULAN BATOR - Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's upcoming official visit to Mongolia will significantly push forward the China-Mongolia good-neighborly partnership of mutual trust, Chinese Ambassador to Mongolia Yu Hongyao said.

The visit, to take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, will be the first by a Chinese premier in 16 years and also the first by Wen as premier.

It is expected to further boost the mutual understanding and trust between the two peoples, as well as bilateral exchanges and cooperation in various fields, Yu said in a recent interview.

The Two Faces of China’s Communist Party

Russell Leigh Moses is a Beijing-based analyst and professor who writes on Chinese politics. He is writing a book on the changing role of power in the Chinese political system.

The Chinese Communist Party has been acting like two parties lately.

One party—the one that dealt with the April earthquake in Qinghai—is an assertive organization, excelling at mobilization and bringing massive logistical firepower to bear. Disasters that require large displays of power are its forte.

The other party—the one that’s trying to cope with a string of recent school killings—is prone to freezing up.

China Bites Into Commodities Reserves

China appears to be eating into some of its commodities reserves, a potentially worrying near-term trend for commodities producers and investors, analysts said.

The phenomenon could help explain why imports from China in markets such as refined copper, iron ore and lead have declined in the last few months. It also could be a factor behind the recent drop in prices for those commodities.

Japan, China to Launch Gas Talks

TOKYO—Japan and China agreed Monday to soon launch formal negotiations toward a treaty over natural gas field development in the East China Sea, the source of a long-running territorial dispute between Asia's two biggest economies.

Asia Manufacturing Expands

Most significant was the data from China, whose raging economy has been one of the drivers of the global rebound. The government's official purchasing managers index, or PMI, fell to 53.9 in May from 55.7 in April, as policy tightening measures to rein in credit growth and prevent asset bubbles appear to be having an effect.

Tough love for an unstable neighbor

BEIJING - As with the traditional cry of ''wolf, wolf!", threats of war between North and South Korea
have been heard many times in the 57 years since the end of the conflict on the peninsula. They sound so often that even the current situation could be considered a false alarm, especially since China stepped in and apparently managed to rein in restless Pyongyang.
