Sino-Japan partnership to help global recovery
BEIJING - China and Japan, the world's second and third largest economies, agreed on Sunday to seek and develop "new engines" for growth, a move that will also help stabilize the global economy.
Premier Wen Jiabao said during a meeting with a Japanese delegation that the "green economy and industries" would be a major part in bilateral economic cooperation.
Kaixin OpEd – This could be very interesting. The potential and conequences for this century are enormous.
Japan must remember the consequences of heeding America’s advice to let their currency appreciate in the late 1980’s.
That caused a recession in Japan that has lasted to this day, over 20 years.
Japan must be watching China handle the same call from America with interest. China is resisting and pointing out, quite accurately in Kaixin’s opinions, that most of the economic problems with America are of its own making.
If China and Japan come together to form a strong economic relationship, then they will be a match for America.
If the other nations in Asia come together then they will become an economic power bloc in their own right.
This will indeed be an interesting century.
China, Japan can herald 'golden age for Asia'
TOKYO - Japan should make the best of China's rapid development and forge ahead with greater cooperation, Wang Chen, minister of the State Council Information Office, told Japanese media on Monday
"Asia should have its own dream," Zhao Qizheng, chairman of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said. "China, Japan and other Asian countries should design our own dream because it would be wrong to copy the American or European dream."
Unity key to Sino-EU relations: French ex-PM
BEIJING - From his birth in North Africa to his early youth spent in South America, Dominique de Villepin would later go on to serve his country with courage and ambition as the French ambassador to both the US and India.
To this end, Villepin is now arriving in China as the Global Chairman of the Asia-Pacific CEO Association for the World Emerging Industries Summit 2010, which opens on Wednesday in Changchun, Jilin.
One of the most critical changes that must take place in the world economy, and the one Villepin said he would stress at the summit, is a structural one.
Rather, it is a shift from "the current competition between our economies to cooperation in order to avoid clashes of our economies," Villepin told China Daily.
"Each of us needs to respect specifics," he said.
Regarding China's "miraculous development," Villepin said "we need the spirit of cooperation by sharing our experience within different industries and regions. "The dynamism of China is absolutely incredible."
Having traveled to China as French foreign minister in 2003 - a post he held from 2002 to 2004 - Villepin has since made more visits representing the Asia-Pacific CEO Association.
Villepin said that France and China now maintain a stable relationship, with leadership visits paid by both sides. "France wants China to play a bigger role in world politics and economy, and hopes for more (bilateral) cooperation," said Villepin.
China to promote collective negotiation on wages
BEIJING -- A senior official with the All China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU) said Monday that in two years all trade unions nationwide would carry out collective negotiations on wages.
By 2012, more than 90 percent of enterprises in China should have trade unions which would represent more than 92 percent of the nation's workers, said Wang Yupu, ACFTU vice-chairperson, at a meeting here.
More expat students to study in China
BEIJING - Tsinghua University, one of China's top universities, said on Monday it will increase its number of foreign graduate students as Beijing steps up its use of education and other "soft power" initiatives to promote its image abroad.
Tsinghua, alma mater of President Hu Jintao, said it will increase the proportion of foreign students in its graduate schools from 7 percent to close to 10 percent by 2020.
Offshore wind project powers up
Work on the offshore wind power demonstration project in Dafeng city, Jiangsu province, has achieved initial success, Zhao Shiming, general manager with Huaneng Renewables said in Beijing on Monday.
The offshore wind power project, designed with an installed capacity of 300-mW, covers an area of 127 square kilometers.
The construction and installation work of the project's offshore wind tower was accomplished and the tower started to measure wind from Aug 15, Zhao said.
Project verification is expected to be completed by the second half of next year and then construction of the project will be started.
Prehistoric villages ruins found in North China
HOHHOT - Archeologists in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region said Monday they have found the ruins of two prehistoric villages in Tongliao City of eastern Inner Mongolia.
The ruins in Hamin'aile Village, of Horqin Left-wing Middle Banner (County), were identified in the spring as possibly originating from Hongshan Culture, dating back 5,000 years, said Ji Ping, a researcher at the Institute of Cultural and Historical Relics and Archaeology of Inner Mongolia.
About 1,200 square meters had been excavated out of an estimated 200,000 square meters, and homes and tombs had been discovered, Ji said.
"Pitted earthenware, such as jars and pots, were also found, which was the first time that have been unearthed in the prehistoric ruins in northeast China," he said.
"We have also found bones of deer and rodent animals, on which we suppose they lived by hunting," he added.
Another group of prehistoric village ruins were located in Nanbaoligaotu Village, of Jarud Banner, with a total area of 10,000 square meters, and more than 200 articles of earthenware, stoneware and jadeware had been discovered.
Ethnic Musical Aoluguya Explores Ewenki culture
The musical "Aoluguya", which opened its curtain on August 26th at the Poly Theatre in Beijing, is based on the true story of Maria Suo, a woman who is part of the dying Ewenki people.
The only hunting tribe in China which keeps its reindeer, the Ewenki today have been reduced to a mere 200 members and 1,200 reindeer. However, China's last female chief, Maria Suo, is still living on this piece of her beloved land, where she has spent all of her life.

Editorial - North Korea's reform and opening-up
The fact that North Korean leader Kim Jong-il visited China last week was finally confirmed by the two governments Monday.
Although foreign media continues to speculate about Kim's "succession plan" and whether he brought his son along, there are signs that the North Korean leader is showing an increasing interest in the economy.
In his two visits within about a three-month span, Kim visited a number of cities that are on the frontier of China's booming market economy.
Earlier, he also visited Vietnam, and inspected Russian cities that were undergoing social transformations.
This points to North Korea having a strong interest in opening up and developing its economy. In fact, the country has made several experimental attempts in the past decade or two, including setting up a special economic zone and conducting currency reform.
It is hard to imagine that any country wants to stay poor and isolated. The international community should not marginalize North Korea out of prejudice.
Chinese TV battles to find global audience
Editor's Note:
By global standards, TV dramas from the Chinese mainland are widely considered cheap, dull, and poorly made. Other countries and regions produce far better works. Can new technologies be used to sell quality mainland TV dramas overseas and promote Chinese culture? People's Daily Online (PO) interviewed Yang Weiguang (Yang), former president of CCTV, on these issues.

Was Essay a Bank Chief’s Plea for Reform?
When the leaders of major state-owned firms emerge to make a statement in English in which they speak on behalf of their whole industry and not just their own firm, it seems safe to assume something’s up.
Kaixin OpEd - Kaixin hopes that this article is not suggesting that reform equates to making the banking system in China similar to Americas'/Wall Street.
The Global Financial Crisis and its continuing aftermath has clearly shown how corrupt and dysfunctional the American (and a fair proportion of the ‘wests’) banking system is.
The banking system in China undoubtedly needs some reform, and I am sure they will attend to it.
