China's PMI index points to uptick in economy
CHINA'S industrial activities rebounded slightly in August for the first time in five months as the country's economy continued to stabilize.
The Purchasing Managers' Index, a comprehensive gauge of manufacturing activities across the country, rose to 50.9 points last month, the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing said yesterday.
Defining future of China's economy
1) Accelerating the transformation of economic growth pattern
China should make greater efforts to accelerate the transformation of its economic growth pattern because a better pattern will help the country, which is in a golden period of development, maintain rapid and stable economic growth and promote the construction of a well-off society. Furthermore, China can draw on its experience in transforming the economic growth pattern to deepen reforms to the administrative system.
2. Promoting coordinated development of different regions
The issue of China's imbalanced regional development lies in neither the imbalance in gross economic output of different regions nor the difference in the pace of development for different regions but rather the overly wide gap in the income of rural and urban residents as well as the levels of public services and infrastructure in different regions.

China pushes for opening up to Eurasian heartland
URUMQI - China will speed up the opening up of its western inland region, continue to fund cross-border infrastructure projects, and roll out favorable policies to make Xinjiang a key economic hub at the heartland of Eurasia.
Vice-Premier Li Keqiang told officials and business leaders attending the first China-Eurasia Expo in Urumqi, Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, on Thursday that opening up to countries in Eurasian heartland was an important part of the country's overall opening-up.
Xinjiang, which covers one-sixth of China's landmass, borders key regional players such as Russia, Kazakhstan, and Pakistan. The region also holds abundant oil and gas reserves. But regional economic activities were slowed partly due to poor infrastructure along the border, which runs across rough territories such as the Pamirs plateau.

The dilemma of holding US govt debt
China has foreign currency reserves of more than $3.2 trillion, about 70 percent of which is believed to be in US dollar assets, especially in Treasury bills and bonds. Given the continuous increase in US government debts and downgrading of its credit rating by Standard & Poor's, the most obvious step for China would be to stop accumulating US Treasuries or start reducing its dollar assets.
Under such circumstances, what exactly can China do?

This past summer holiday, I finally read a 2006 book in Chinese written by the grand, old man of Chinese cultural linguistics, Professor Ji Xianlin (1911-2009). The title of his book crystallizes his view that culture and civilization are like a river that flows east for 30 years and then west for the next 30.

Alive and kicking in the cadres' memorial home
By Wu Zhong, China Editor
Critics have slammed the appointment of retired cadres to help lead National People's Congress sub-committees as a step back for reform. But with deputies increasingly asserting their rights and a party jarred by trembles from the Middle East, a recent reshuffle that put more old hands into the country's most powerful institution could possibly be about exerting a stabilizing influence. Sinecures in businesses are a gray area too.

China's second coming in Libya

China evacuated 35,000 of its nationals from Libya when civil war broke out in February. While rebels and observers think opposition to Western air strikes in support of victorious rebels has priced Beijing and its companies out of the market for reconstruction, the rules of the "big power" game and China's existing experience in building essential Libyan infrastructure work in its favor. In post-Muammar Gaddafi Libya, China can reveal its intent to be a "responsible player".
