The United States has the doctrine, the means and the motivation to make mischief for China in 2012. In an unusually toxic election year, expect the US to feed the "return to Asia" narrative with the specter of China as an arrogant and destabilizing regional threat. That will make China leery and ready to repel any sign that Washington may apply its "preventative diplomacy" doctrine to cross red lines in Taiwan, Tibet and the South China Sea. Miscalculation on either side could spark trouble. - Peter Lee

China's economy to remain beacon and engine in 2012
BEIJING, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- China's economy will not break. Instead, it will sustain its robust vitality and remain a beacon of hope and an engine of growth for the still fragile world economy in 2012.
Some Western analysts, including Nobel Laureate Paul Krugman, who is known not only for his economic insights but for his harsh judgement on China's economy, recently warned of a possible crash of the Chinese economy in the near future.
They claimed that slowing growth and declining stock and commodity prices were signals that the country's property bubble was set to burst.
Such warnings, however, are simply far-fetched and do not reflect the reality of China's economy.
Charting a course to peace
BEIJING - The South China Sea will continue to be a testing matter next year between China and its neighbors, but hope remains for improvement, experts said.
China has experienced increased pressure this year regarding sovereignty of the South China Sea, where Malaysia, the Philippines, Brunei and Vietnam hold competing claims.
Although China has clear historical evidence to confirm it rightfully holds sovereignty, Southeast Asian countries, including Vietnam and the Philippines, enlarged their presence in the water area and adopted a tough stance over their disputes with China, said Zhang Tuosheng, a researcher at the China Foundation for International and Strategic Studies.
The interference of the United States further complicated the situation, he said.

Chinese president delivers New Year address, stresses world peace, development
BEIJING, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- In a New Year's address broadcast on Saturday, Chinese President Hu Jintao vowed that China will continue to develop friendly exchanges with other countries and positively participate in international cooperation on global issues.
While addressing domestic and overseas audiences via state TV and radio broadcasters, Hu urged the acceleration of the transformation of the country's economic development pattern and structural adjustments while making more efforts in ensuring people's livelihood.
The country will continue to balance maintaining steady and relatively fast economic growth with adjusting its economic structures and managing inflation expectations, he said in the speech titled "Jointly Improve World Peace and Development," which was broadcast by China Radio International, China National Radio and China Central Television.
China will stick to the guidelines of "one country, two systems," "Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong," "Macao people governing Macao," and a high degree of autonomy in maintaining the long-term prosperity and stability of Hong Kong and Macao, Hu said.
"We will adhere to the principles of 'peaceful reunification' and 'one country, two systems,' continue to push forward the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, ensure the basic benefits for those of the Chinese nationality, and endlessly work for the common benefit of the compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait," he said.

Countries stagnate in their comfort zone
The year 2011 has witnessed many political and economic changes and some of the changes foreshadow future trends. China is one of the driving forces of world change. Interactions between China and the world are clear, but it is not certain in what ways the two influence each other.
The uncertainty of China is being discussed all over the world. However the problem is not only China but the whole world being uncertain.
It seems the US has a relatively stable political framework, but the country's future, its gross national output and welfare are not necessarily certain. Once the economy cannot be maintained, US politics will be difficult to predict.
No countries stay permanently in a safe zone. It is a global law that countries move between progress and recession and recession always goes with instability.
At the beginning of 2011, China was listed as a country at high risk of revolution by the Western countries. They hyped up the protest staged by a handful of people in Wangfujing of Beijing as China's "Jasmine revolution."
China has contemplated its uncertainty and made efforts to solve these problems. It treats domestic issues seriously and has made the most prominent changes among global economies.
Compared with China, the US and Europe have not made any remarkable progress in economy and politics, merely changing leaders or slogans.
