南京南京 Nanking Nanking

NANKING is a powerful reminder of the heartbreaking cost of war and testament to the courage and conviction of those few determined to stand up against its horrors. Known as "The rape of Nanking," the Japanese army in 1937 invaded China's capital city, unleashing a horrific onslaught of murder and rape. Incredibly, a small group of Westerners who stayed behind saved thousands.
Japan will not apologise or in many cases not even recongise that this happened. The world looked the other way at the time, and still keeps its eys firmly averted.
China seeks an acknowledgment from Japan of their culpability and a real apology. It does not appear to be forthcoming.

From internationally celebrated director Zhang Yimou (Ju Dou, Raise the Red Lantern, Hero, House Of Flying Daggers) comes a story of love and war - and a band of outcasts who emerge as unlikely heroes from the shadows of a city's occupation. At once lyrical and visceral, the film enters the apocalyptic world of Nanjing in 1937 only to find a vibrant human story about the invisible people of the city and a series of unexpected relationships that lead to a resonant act of sacrifice.
