Old Man, Beshkadem, Uighur Autonomous Region by Elka Ruth Enola

What a wonderful old man he was! He was so genuinely happy to see my camera and to look at his image and the images of those around him. He was deliciously excited at the wonder of digital photography.

Pulling our Boat, Shennong Stream by Elka Ruth Enola

It was interesting to ride the pea boat on the Shennong Stream. We retuned with men onboard guiding the boat with poles as the river carried us fairly quickly back to our starting point. But the way up stream was incredibly hard. On shore were 4 young men who pulled our boat against the strong current. It was times like these that I was forcefully reminded of how labour intensive life in China still is.

Squatters, Mosque, Kashgar by Elka Ruth Enola

The old part of Kashgar was pretty derelict. There was an abandoned decrepit mosque which we stopped at. In the courtyard, on a twisted iron bed with no mattress sat an old woman and a young child. There was no water. No electricity. No heat. Our guide said that this is where they lived. No one could tell me what happened to the generation between them.
