  Learn Chinese

On Skype

Learn how to SPEAK CHINESE, don’t learn how to just study Chinese.

Why do the Chinese schools spend so much on teachers from English speaking countries?

Because they found that no matter how well you can study English, you need to hear it spoken and speak to someone whose mother language is English, if you want to use it.

The Silk Road - it´s a name that conjures up thoughts of romance and adventure. Perhaps the most famous trade route of all time, the Silk Road wound its way through the deserts and mountains of China´s northwest, across Western and Central Asia, and on to the Middle East, Europe and Africa. But its importance wasn´t confined to trade. For many centuries, the Silk Road was the key channel for political, cultural and religious exchange between East and West.

"See what we think"

Who will be the last frog in the well?

At the end of the 18th century, Lord Macartney, the ambassador of the British king George III, had been instructed to request in Beijing permission to send a British representative to the Chinese imperial court and to create the conditions for the expansion of trade between the Qing Dynasty and the British kingdom. The written answer of the Chinese emperor Qianlong, who reigned over the empire for 59 years (the People's Republic is 60 this year) is, in a sense, a gem:

Why then should foreign nations advance this utterly unreasonable request to be represented at my court? If you assert that your reverence for Our Celestial dynasty fills you with a desire to acquire our civilization, understand that our ceremonies and code of laws differ so completely from your own that, even if your envoy were able to acquire the rudiments of our civilization, you could not possibly transplant our manners and customs to your alien soil ... I have but one aim in view, namely, to maintain a perfect governance and to fulfill the duties of the state: strange and costly objects do not interest me. (David Gosset - Asia Times Online)

Kaixin has been created to bring you a broader and positive view of China. As Carmel Lillis wrote in her entry for the writing competition, 'An exercise in colouring in' ;

 Why not China?’ she (her daughter who was about to travel to China) repeats.

‘Because,’ I cast about for a metaphor to explain, and seize upon the colouring book that my five year old is busy over. ‘Because when I think of China I see nothing reassuring, nothing familiar, no colour. Only grey. People dressed in grey, shoulders stooped, heading into grey factory smoke, or shuffling home in grey twilight to grey flats.’

When I think of China now, I see images of vibrant colour. Warm smiles of welcome; rich architecture; children bubbling with excitement.

That is the China Kaixin wants to bring you, "... images of vibrant colour. Warm smiles of welcome; rich architecture; children bubbling with excitement."
